About the Artist
Bayo Ogundele was born in 1949 in Osogbo, Nigeria, one of the most important centres of modern African art and theatre. He trained at the Ori-Olokun Cultural Centre at Obafemi Awolowo University under Solomon Irein Wangboje between 1969 and 1971, developing a strong foundation within the Osogbo artistic tradition. Working primarily in oil on canvas, his artworks are inspired by Yoruba culture, everyday life, and his surrounding environment. His paintings are recognised for their expressive forms, symbolism, and strong cultural identity. Alongside painting, Bayo Ogundele was also actively involved in theatre and performance, contributing to productions both within Nigeria and internationally. Today, Baba Labayo Ogundele continues to reside in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, where his artworks remain widely collected and appreciated by audiences around the world.
