About the Artist

Tijani Mayakiri was born in Ilorin in 1937 and became an important figure within the cultural and artistic development of Oshogbo, Nigeria. His journey moved through teaching, agriculture, and business before he found his true calling in theatre and cultural performance.

Inspired by the performances of Duro Ladipo, Tijani became deeply involved in the growing artistic community that later became known as the Osogbo art movement. Through theatre, storytelling, music, and community engagement, he contributed to the cultural environment that helped shape one of Africa’s most influential artistic movements.

His dedication to preserving and celebrating Yoruba tradition played an important role in the creative spirit that defined Oshogbo’s artistic identity. Today, Tijani Mayakiri is remembered for his lasting contribution to Nigerian culture, performance, and the evolution of the Osogbo artistic tradition.
